| WISE a unique program that provides students with opportunities to intern or to develop original and creative projects.The WISE program modifies the senior year curriculum to provide enrichment to the academic experience of seniors at Newton South High School. The purpose of the wise program is to allow students the opportunity to apply and broaden their knowledge and skills in an area of personal interest. Its goal is to encourage students to develop their independence, confidence and sense of responsibility. In addition, the WISE Program provides for s structured and supportive transition from school to college and work. During the second semester, seniors, under the guidance of faculty members, who are the students mentors, will complete an educational experience determined to be worthy in scope and content. The WISE Program is for second semester seniors. WISE students can follow a curricular or extracurricular passion, explore a career interest, or create a community service project. Many WISE students serve as interns in social agencies, hospitals and businesses. Others do intensive research, artistic scientific or creative work. Each student receives guidance from the mentor he or she has chosen from the staff of Newton South High School. Basic WISE Program requirements include students meeting weekly with their mentor, adequate reading in the area of stud, and maintaining a journal reflecting the activities, attitudes/feelings, and acquired knowledge that the student has gained. Each student makes an oral presentation in mid May to an audience that includes an evaluation committee of WISE Task Force members. Community members, other students and family members are encouraged to attend and become part of the experience. After the presentation, the mentor prepares a written evaluation. Leading colleges praise the WISE Program and regard it as an asset for applicants. Hundreds of WISE graduates pursue careers begun as WISE projects.The governance of the WISE Program is the function of the WISE Task Force, which is comprised of students, NSHS Staff, and community members working together to make the program a successful experience for students. All Students participating in the WISE program have the option to become WISE Task Force Members. The WISE program provides academic credit on a PASS or FAIL basis. Each WISE Student will receive two and a half elective credits towards graduation upon the successful completion of their project. The wise program can replace a minimum of one course per term. If a student does not meet the requirements of the WISE Program, he or she will fail WISE and will not receive credit for WISE nor be allowed to give a final presentation. |
